The foal is the young of a horse that is below the age of one year. Any horse between one day to one year is usually a foal. But many people who do not have enough knowledge about it, call them horses.
Foal: Birth And Early Development
A mare gives birth to the foal after a pregnancy of 11 months. The birthing process is quick, and labor takes less time than humans. The foals are so healthy that they can start their activity with the herd after some hours after birth. However, they need food on a timely basis and cannot work if they are not fed for 12 hours. Moreover, they are healthy enough to carry three pounds of weight in their initial months. They also feed on their mother’s milk for the first two weeks of their birth. Therefore, the mare requires more nourishing food and water to produce milk.
The foal can intake solid food after ten days of its birth. Moreover, they would require more nutrients in their diet after ten weeks. The mare will also need more food nutrients. So, if not provided with enough nutrients, both horses can have health issues.
Maturity In Foal
Usually, foals are feeding on their mother’s milk until the age of six months. In many cases, they continue to feed on their mother until she is foaling or up to three years. However, the mother’s milk would not provide enough nutrients for the foal after four months. Furthermore, the mare foals are not supposed to be forced to breed at this early age. So, people usually fix the breeding age of up to three years from their birth.
Training horses at a young age would help the rider in the future. However, if the foals are too young, people cannot use them to drive or ride. So, their owner teaches them some of the basic things while they are at such a young age. For example, the owner trains them to follow a person when they go somewhere, or to understand when to stop. Moreover, the coach can teach them some grooming techniques using different equipment. However, the foal should know the basics of getting into the horse trailer or using a horse blanket. Then, the owner should list the things taught to the foal, as they would remember it for life.
Thus, foals are mostly the younger version of horses. Moreover, they are more active and capable of working at a young age as well. But, owners prefer not to make them work, as their young bodies need some time to grow. So, hindering their growth processes would harm them. Thus, people should love and pamper these animals. Therefore, their growing process would also improve with this kind of pampering.
