People are often amused and surprised when they see horses, either at horse shows, country fairs, or even at the circus. The horse may seem like an oddity at first, but they are a result of hundreds of years of selective breeding. “Miniature Horses,” as they are affectionately called, are believed to have originated from Shetland ponies. They were bred specifically for a variety of tasks, including working in coal mines, as pets for royalty, and as performers at traveling circuses and carnivals.

The first records of an individual owning miniature horses were kept in the mid-1600s. These horses were said to belong to King Louis XIV and were kept at his Versailles palace in France. The first minis arrived in the United States in the 1800s and worked in the coal mines of the Appalachian Mountains.

Miniatures horses are used for a variety of purposes today, including livestock, pets, and companion animals for those who are disabled. Minis live to be between 20 to 30 years old, the same lifespan of their larger counterparts.

Not Ponies, Small Horses

It said that ponies like Shetlands are real rivals of miniature for their size. But ponies and miniature both are different in several ways. Ponies bred with thicker nicks, stocky, and coats. The ponies also have thick fluffy manes, short legs, and coats. But miniature is a produced that looks like a younger brother of a full-sized horse. Instead, they have a pony but have similar features like a more massive horse. The little guys have a straight leg and longer neck with ponies. They look different and attractive. Due to this reason, Americans prefer to flying with them as compared to others.

Height In Inches-Miniature Horses

Most of the breed of horses measured in hands. It considered that one hand equal to 3 inches. But when we measure the height of miniatures, then we use inches. Usually, the maximum height of the minis is 38 inches. The height of minis does not exceed 39 inches. But some people believe that the right minis should not exceed 34 inches.

Most of the therapist use minis in their therapies. They said that minis are great therapy horses.  Miniatures have perfect sized for disable people or kids to touch and feed treats. The size of minis is also ideal for transportation and visit. They are even playing an essential role in assisted therapy organization for disabled people.  Miniatures have a gentle and friendly nature that makes them different. Due to this reason, minis are the ideal choice for shy and nervous people. Some people also take miniatures to nursing homes or hospitals to visit elderly and sick individuals.

Usually, most of the breed of horses come in a handful of colors. But miniatures colors come in a variety of colors such as bays, colored blacks, classic and so on. The chestnut colors of minis gain lots of popularity. It looks different and attractive. Along with colors, you can also see different patterns of minis, such as leopard spots, pinto, and many more.
